One of the biggest gaming communities in the entire world is the Magic the Gathering Community. Created in 1993 this card game containing monsters, spells, and plenty more has grown to be be played all over the world. It now has its own online game that is already a huge hit.
The thing with MTG is that it is so popular that people constantly crave new cards. MTG and Wizards of the coast release multiple new sets each year. Now resembling a Seasonal release plan, there are four major sets planned for the Year 2020. The first has already launched. Theros Beyond Death, which places the player in a realm of Gods, heroes, and beats. The next Three should be quite interesting.
An honorable mention real quick as it is not a main line new set. This box set, which can be pre-ordered in the link to the side, is called unsanctioned. For many veteran MTG players the "UN" sets are some of their favorite. These sets throw in absurd rules and actions that change the face of the game. This box set will combine numerous old UN sets and all new cards into a two player brawl of un-realistic proportions.
Keep an eye out for this set dropping 02/28/20!!!
The next set releasing should be a big hitter! Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, promises to let players "build their own Monsters," Apparently, there will be a new play mechanic introduced into the game when the set is released that will allow players to accomplish this task. there is quite a lot at this point regarding this that is speculative.
Wizards of the Coast, MTG's parent distributor states that the mechanic behind the monster building aspect will be "one of the craziest" incorporated into the game to date. The main art released so far Shows a huge beast chasing off smaller creatures. It also shows the planes walker Vivien Reid facing down the towering behemoth. There is little else known about the upcoming set, but it should be an interesting new plane, and give us plenty of new intimidating monsters. As a mainly Green mana player, I use a ton of large creatures!
The next mainline set releasing in Q3 of 2020 is the core set of MTG. Each year a new "Core" set releases. These sets are more of a general theme focusing on rebranding cards, offering some new cards, and building a base for what has happened the year they are released.
From some leaks so far it seems the main Planes walker focused on is Teferi, he is a Blue and White mage. There are usually 4-5 main Planes walker decks that release along these sets. This Core set however, will only have two. So it is possible they are pulling some of the attention away from planes walkers and possibly putting an added effort into the new monster building Mechanic. Sadly we will have to wait until mid 2020 to start getting some solid information.
The final Set to Drop in 2020 should also be quite interesting. Zendikar Rising is the final set named for the year. Obviously being so far out, not much is known about it. However, the last time players visited Zendikar it was being overrun by some of the most overpowered enemies to ever enter the MTG cannon. The Eldrazi. monstrous Cthulhu like entities sporting High attack and Defense had nearly taken over the plane in Canon.
Thankfully, the planes walkers we able to defeat them in a last ditch attempt. So this time we venture back to Zendikar, a realm of mainly creatures and empty open areas, it is without the threat of the Eldrazi. Given the fact that it is called "Zendikar Rising" I would assume it is about the rebuilding of the Plane and new adventures or a new enemy rising to take on the heroes of the MTG universe.
It is set to be a great year for players and the Magic the Gathering Universe in General.
