There are plenty of interesting techniques and experiments used throughout history during paranormal investigations. One peive of equipment that has gained a lot of popularity in the 2000's is the "spirit box", most commonly the sb7.
The spirit box scans through radio stations at various speeds, this creates a sort of white noise which allows spirits or entities to speak through. This has gained fame on many shows especially ghost adventures. However, some investigators are using it in a different way.
(I will post ads throughout the article for what my team uses during the Experiments)
First documented at Estes Park, Colorado (home of the Stanley Hotel) in January 2016. It was at this time, Karl Pfeiffer, Connor Randall, and Michelle Tate decided to implement a new experiment while using an SB-7 ghost box: double-blind monitoring. Named after the location, the Estes method was born. The method takes the spirit box and makes a person the conduit instead of the speaker.
What is needed:
1. Spirit Box (SB7 main stream)
2. Noise Cancelling or decent earmuff headphones
3. Blind Fold
The key to the method, which takes at least two individuals. Is the sensory deprivation of the conduit. One individual sits comfortably, donning a blindfold. The headphones are plugged into the "spout" input of the machine, not the headphone input, the spout is louder.
The machine can be set to different frequency speeds.
My team usually uses 100-150, then sweeps reverse. This causes the tale tale skipping static sound heard on TV shows. Anything over 200 seems like it is too easy to just hear words from radio stations. The second team member at this point would then begin asking questions of the entities or spirits. The key here is that the person with the blindfold and headphones can not hear or see team member asking the questions.
The main goal here is to get coherent responses from the person listening. Their job is to say aloud everything they hear that is coherent. Words, sentences, phrases.
This would Hopefully be in line with what the other team member is asking. Questions such as...
What is on the table? Who's home is this? or More direct questioning. Can you tell us your name?
Hopefully the responses the listener gets make sense with what is being asked. That is the golden time with the Estes method. If this is happening, that is the main goal of the method. It does take a long time to become familiar with the sounds and phrases coming through the sb7 box. My team and myself went a good number of times not being able to pic out any full words. This is not a method that someone can usually just pick up and go. Once you take the time to really listen you can hear some pretty amazing things.
Side Note- We use Turtle beach gaming headsets. This is mainly because they come noise deafening usually, yes they have mics but you can silence them, This set is similar to the ones we use. we prefer the gaming mics because they often have adjustments as well for bass, treble, etc.
Good Luck, Good Hunting.
