Playstation 5, rumors and Facts

Updated: Feb 12, 2020

As a solid owner and believer in having a playstation home, I really wanted to dive into what we know so far about the PS5. First and foremost the most important thing, when does it come out???

The official release date is "Holiday 2020". So we can expect October- December. Should make it an absurd Holdiay gaming season for 2020. A suspected leak from Sony placed it on November 20,2020. So I guess we will have to wait and see. With sony not attending E3 last year, we may have to wait for Sony to release updates when they are ready.

This release date will put it in direct competition with the new X Series Xbox, so again, plenty of fireworks and craziness. One thing that will certainly affect the season and reception of the new consoles are price. This is one point where so far the warring consoles differ.

The PS5 will allegedly drop at $499, which is $50 less than the X Series. The Xbox specs seem a touch outlandish, one thing I stand buy is that what we see is what we get. Microsoft is saying the Xbox will have super high next gen specs. 8k video and gaming and all the bells and whistles.

The PS5 for the most part stays right on track. 8k capable, a storage drive 19 times faster than previous iterations. That AMD one-two-punch of CPU and GPU unlocks the powers of ray tracing, an advanced lighting technique that can bring next-level immersion to gaming visuals. It's a Hollywood technique that's used in big-budget CGI spectacles, putting the level of visual fidelity you can expect into context.

One key word I did not expect to see was 5G. Sony intends to use the most up to date tech to aid in systems like playstation now, to stream games directly to the system faster and easier. Remote Play is already available as part of the PS4 package, enabling you to stream a game direct from the console to a computer, smartphone, tablet or PS Vita handheld console. But Sony says that going forward it will be "leveraging the latest computing, streaming, cloud, and 5G technologies" to allow it, and the performance of PlayStation Now, to improve.

one thing that I do not care for and am hoping this is one of the rumors that does not work out is the design. I know they want to be different, and the nex Series X will litterally be just a square tower apparently.( Dumb) The "leaked" design for the ps5 is just awful .If you know anything about tech, this box reminds me of something you slide into a stack of servers and leave there, in a basement somewhere.

it is not sleek, not the normal nice lines and deep black of the last few iterations. It is still a rumor for now, but damn that is just rough. Maybe i am on my own with the disdain for this. maybe if they add some of the signature blue led's or something. what we can see from these renders of the leaked images are interesting though.

There's a number of buttons: On/Standby, Reset, Eject (for the double layer 100GB-reading Blu-ray drive), System Initialisation and Network initialisation, all on the front left. There are also a number of status lights, numbering '0' to '7', which likely relate to CPU cores engaged, but could also be a status light for controllers connected.

To the right there are 5 USB ports (one USB 2.0 and five likely USB 3.0 ports – the final port being obscured by a cable), as well as a USB type B port. A small circle above could well be a camera built into the console, according to earlier patent filings. Now an important thing to note, this could be a developer kit. They are known to be a little more robust, in order to handle the load developers put on the system in testing.

Finally, the controller, what will the new one have in store for us? According to a Sony patent for a new controller, published by the Japanese patent office (via VGC), the PS5 controller could look very similar to the DualShock 4 - with some key differences. For a start, the potential PS5 controller seems to have a slightly chunkier design, built-in microphone, larger triggers, no light bar and smaller sticks. It also seems the DualShock 4's micro USB port has been replaced by a smaller USB-C port, which is placed on the top rather than the bottom of the controller.

The lack of a light bar begs the question how will the system track the controller, especially in VR games. This has not clearly been explained, but with all this new tech, maybe they have something up their sleeves over at Sony. Hopefully we will get more updates during the summer either from Sony or E3. Microsoft has dropped a sick trailer for Hellblade 2, a game I am dying to try. So hopefully we will get some new trailers soon as well. The world is waiting to see what the games will look like as well as the final system design. Only a year left to go ugh!
