Ghost causes mass Hysteria in Ghana

Updated: Feb 12, 2020

If there is one thing I have learned about Africa. They love their superstitions, witchcraft, and ghosts. I had done some digging into stories from the region. Ghana is choked full of goodies. From one of our recent Podcast Episodes, Goblins of Africa, we see that even the Fairy folklore has a home there.

While not exactly the same as normal goblins, there were descriptions of small beings causing trouble. Some of these beings were used by witch doctors to curse those who offended them, or the enemies of the highest payer. Oh, there are also witch doctor wrestling events. where two witch doctors litteraly wrestle in a ring, using a mix of "magic" and actual fighting. What a time to be alive!

When I found this story it was really no surprise at this point to hear this from Ghana. apparently what had happened goes as follows. A high school in Ghana was forced to shut down this week after an alleged ghost sighting sparked something of a panic among the pupils. The strangeness reportedly began in the village of Fumbisi on Sunday evening when a group of female students were studying in their dormitory. According to the teens, their work was interrupted when an apparition of a person suddenly appeared before their eyes.

This apparently happened twice. Once on a Sunday night, and next on Monday. some people were claiming since the teens fainted after seeing the spirit, that it must have been a spiritual attack by the entity. One poor girl was so frightened she actually jumped from a second story window. She was taken and treated at a nearby hospital, she survived.

All in all around twenty students ended up being hospitalized after the incident. This however, was not the end of the mayhem. apparently the students were affected by the event in such a way that they acted completely out of character. One employee of the school stated the day after.

“Then also around 1 am this morning…some of the students…went to the housemistress’ bungalow and threw stones to damage some of her properties. From there they continued to the headmaster’s bungalow where they assaulted the night security man. So, when day broke, the troubles were still going on. [The school] prepared their [students] breakfast for them but they said they will not eat. So, the headmaster, in consultation with the DCE and the Regional Director of Education, took a decision that…they should close the school down until further notice.”

All of the teens who experienced the event were treated at local clinics. Around 16 of them were sent to a larger hospital to be checked out for various issues. As for who or what the being actually was we may never really know. Things like this, as I mentioned before have a tendency to occur in the region.

You would be just as likely to get an answer saying that is was a normal ghost, as you would saying it was sent by an angry family member. The fact that the teens collapsed is not really that surprising either given the superstition. The fact that some collapsed a day later, leads me to believe some of the event is hysteria, or just not wanting to go to class. Which I can honestly say I have some up with worst excuses to miss school.
