How does 3 Body Problem Novel Actually relate to our modern Tech?

Liu Cixin’s "The Three-Body Problem," a science fiction masterpiece, captivates readers with its imaginative portrayal of advanced technologies and extraterrestrial civilizations. Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution and spanning centuries, the novel explores profound scientific and philosophical questions. Intriguingly, many of the technologies depicted in the book have parallels in our current technological landscape. Let's delve into some of the key technologies from "The Three-Body Problem" and their real-world counterparts.

The Netflix Show does an incredibly good job showing our modern tech intermingling with the theme of the Novel. Personally I am super excited for the next one or two seasons, which one has at least been confirmed in the works. The Novel itself, obviously written in a different time, will be the focus of our article here today, so lets get to it.

Sophons and Quantum Computing

In the Novel:

The Trisolarians, an advanced alien civilization, deploy sophons—subatomic particles equipped with artificial intelligence and capable of instant communication across vast distances. Sophons disrupt Earth’s scientific endeavors by rendering particle accelerators useless, thereby stalling progress in fundamental physics.

In Reality:

While we have not mastered subatomic AI spies, the concept of sophons draws a clear parallel to quantum computing. Quantum computers utilize quantum bits (qubits) that can exist in multiple states simultaneously, enabling them to solve certain problems much faster than classical computers. Google’s Sycamore processor and IBM’s quantum computing projects are pushing the boundaries of this technology. Moreover, quantum entanglement, a phenomenon where particles become interconnected and the state of one instantly influences the other, even across great distances, hints at the kind of instant communication sophons achieve.

This is certainly an aspect of the novel and the show. It shows us that these advancements could be closer than ever. As far as we know however, Earth does not have the ability to unfold dimensions and expand or retract particles in that fashion. I must also make note of the Sophon that can encompass Earth, sounds a lot like Sophia. Sophia being a gnostic belief that she was God's first thought and that she could be us, or a term for soul.

The Red Coast Base and SETI

In the Novel:

Red Coast Base is a top-secret Chinese military project aimed at searching for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) and developing means to communicate with potential alien civilizations. It serves as the starting point for humanity’s first contact with the Trisolarians.

In Reality:

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is an ongoing scientific effort to detect signals from alien civilizations. Projects like Breakthrough Listen use powerful radio telescopes to scan the cosmos for unusual signals. The Arecibo message, sent in 1974, was humanity’s first serious attempt to communicate with potential extraterrestrials, much like the transmissions from Red Coast Base. Just recently it was released that another site, like SETI, has discovered a signal from a distant system that repeats every hour. This could be a major discovery.

VR and Trisolaris’ Three-Body Game

In the Novel:

The Three-Body game is a complex virtual reality (VR) simulation that immerses players in the chaotic world of Trisolaris, where they must solve the riddle of the planet’s erratic climate to progress. This game serves as a covert method for the Trisolarian civilization to recruit human allies.

In Reality:

Virtual reality technology has advanced significantly, providing immersive experiences for gaming, education, and training. Modern VR systems, such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, offer highly interactive environments where users can explore simulated worlds. While we haven’t yet developed a game as intricate as the Three-Body game, AI-driven simulations and VR training programs for astronauts and military personnel are steps in that direction.

Advanced Propulsion and Space Travel

In the Novel:

Trisolarians possess advanced space travel capabilities, including the ability to hibernate for long journeys and use sophisticated propulsion systems. Their fleet’s journey to Earth, although taking centuries, showcases their technological prowess.

In Reality:

Interstellar travel remains a distant dream for humanity, as far as we know,

but significant strides are being made in space propulsion technologies. NASA’s development of the ion thruster, which uses ions for propulsion, and private ventures like SpaceX working on the Starship for Mars colonization are laying the groundwork. Concepts like the Breakthrough Starshot project, aiming to send lightweight spacecraft to neighboring star systems using light sails propelled by lasers, echo the aspirations depicted in the novel.

AI and Intelligent Nanomaterials

In the Novel:

Trisolarian technology includes highly advanced AI and intelligent nanomaterials capable of self-replication and adaptation, posing significant challenges for humanity.

In Reality:

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly advancing, with AI systems now capable of performing complex tasks, from medical diagnosis to autonomous driving. Nanotechnology is also evolving, with researchers developing materials that can repair themselves, adapt to environmental changes, and perform specific tasks at the molecular level. While we’re still far from the level of sophistication seen in the novel, the foundational technologies are being developed.(Side note: The nano fiber scene with the Boat on the show, was the most insane thing ive ever seen. I did not know nano fibers could do that.)

"The Three-Body Problem" presents a fascinating glimpse into a future shaped by advanced technology and extraterrestrial contact. While many of the technologies described in Liu Cixin’s work remain speculative, contemporary scientific advancements suggest that elements of this fictional world may one day become reality. Some already have, and more than the general public is likely aware of. Some believe we already have bases on the moon as well as interstellar travel.

It is also worth noting the "Star Wars" speech given by President Reagan in 1983. He stated that we will have to come together to face a threat from out of our own system. That threat would be the one to unite us as a species. So again, we see this narrative playing out, could this be what truly awaits us in the near future???
